American Life League Statement on ‘Masterpiece Bakery v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission’ Decision

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 4th, 2018) – American Life League president Judie Brown issued the following statement regarding the US Supreme Court’s ruling on Masterpiece Bakery v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission:

According to the US Supreme Court ruling, “Hostility to religion” was exhibited by the Colorado Civil Rights Commission in the matter of the Masterpiece Bakeshop, and while this decision is narrowly written, the standard set forth in our Constitution with regard to freedom of religion is upheld.
As the Court said in the Masterpiece decision, “Phillips [the baker] was entitled to a neutral decision-maker who would give full and fair consideration to his religious objection as he sought to assert it in all of the circumstances in which this case was presented, considered, and decided.”

We applaud the narrow ruling in this case, and hope by extension the same fairness is applied to the babies not yet born. One would hope that the Court would view the facts in a case demonstrating the humanity of the preborn child with the same objectivity and not relegate the question of human personhood to the trash heap of “personal opinion.”
