Resolving to Defend the Innocents

By Judie Brown

No matter the party in charge in a given state, be they Republican or Democrat, the babies are always at risk. After all, since when should an entire class of people be subjected to a choice between life or death depending on election results? This is madness!

In recent elections we learned that babies will once again be at risk due to feckless voting patterns. This brings me to the point of this commentary: A baby is always a baby no matter where he lives, and yet it seems that politics dictate where a baby is safe and where he is at risk of brutal death. As one report states, “Republicans in North Carolina and Wisconsin failed to secure supermajorities in both legislative chambers, which they would have needed to do in order to override vetoes from their Democratic governors.”

This spells death for babies and thus the fundamental question for this new year: Why do politics dictate whether or not innocent people will be murdered? The answer is quite simply that the pro-life movement is in large part fundamentally focused on elections and party.

This has to change! So perhaps this is the year when most pro-life Americans will finally realize that the act of aborting a child is wrong no matter which state one lives in and no matter which political party is in charge. The sad truth is that after one half a century, that deadly act has become nothing more than a political issue. This is a travesty that has left millions of dead bodies in its wake.

How we change that is up to us as pro-life Americans who realize that every one of these babies is a gift from God, not a political agenda item. This requires us to refocus our language so that we are talking about persons who exist from the beginning regardless of what sort of political party is calling the shots.

But after all these years, redirecting the attention of the public—even those within the pro-life movement—is not going to be easy. This is so because politics has become ground zero for not only pro-life people but for their fundraising apparatus. In the process we have lost the truth, and it is my solemn hope that in 2023 we find it and begin to talk about it.

Below we read inspiration from Scripture—the truth outlined by God Himself in His word:

Jeremiah 1:5: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you came to birth I consecrated you; I appointed you as prophet to the nations.”

Genesis 2:7: “Yahweh God shaped man from the soil of the ground and blew the breath of life into his nostrils, and man became a living being.”

No matter where we turn, if we rely on the Lord and His words, we find a truth that is fundamental to all we do in defense of the innocent. Not only that but because we know that the world waxes cold to the idea of sin, we are the ones who have to insist on telling the truth about the sinful nature of killing another person. We are not striving, after all, to be popular, but rather to be faithful to God and His babies.

Let us resolve to defend the truth, the innocents, and the gift of life for everyone.
