Fighting for Every Baby Every Time

By Judie Brown

Just this week the United States House of Representatives passed the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. Contrary to the headlines and statements from pro-life pundits, this bill is NOT a ban.

This legislation permits a physician’s decision to kill the preborn child if the mother’s life is in danger or if the pregnancy resulted from rape or incest. National Review describes these exceptions as “usual”—a word that sent chills down my spine!

Imagine, if you can, the millions of little ones who have died over the past 38 years because abortion was committed on their vulnerable bodies.

Now imagine what it would be like to hear them crying out on behalf of their preborn brothers and sisters who are alive but threatened by man’s callous disregard to each and every baby, no matter the circumstance, no matter the age of the child, no matter the excuse for the abortion.

If you can imagine this scene, you can see my point. Every innocent preborn child is an individual human being from his biological beginning until death. There is never a reason to kill a single one of them or to establish limits on which ones will be saved because of their age or their heartbeat. There simply is no reason to kill an innocent member of the human race.

Recall these words of St. John Paul II, written in the profound encyclical Evangelium Vitae:

Abortion and euthanasia are thus crimes which no human law can claim to legitimize.

Before the moral norm which prohibits the direct taking of the life of an innocent human being “there are no privileges or exceptions for anyone. It makes no difference whether one is the master of the world or the ‘poorest of the poor’ on the face of the earth. Before the demands of morality we are all absolutely equal.”

The moral gravity of procured abortion is apparent in all its truth if we recognize that we are dealing with murder and, in particular, when we consider the specific elements involved. The one eliminated is a human being at the very beginning of life. No one more absolutely innocent could be imagined.

God’s commandments teach us the way of life. The negative moral precepts, which declare that the choice of certain actions is morally unacceptable, have an absolute value for human freedom: they are valid always and everywhere, without exception. They make it clear that the choice of certain ways of acting is radically incompatible with the love of God and with the dignity of the person created in his image. Such choices cannot be redeemed by the goodness of any intention or of any consequence; they are irrevocably opposed to the bond between persons; they contradict the fundamental decision to direct one’s life to God.

No one can read these words and not be struck with the simple truth conveyed. The great Saint John Paul II teaches this simple truth: There is never a reason to murder one of God’s innocent children—not now, not ever—no matter what the perceived reason might be. Whether it’s because of political advantage, pragmatism, incrementalism, or partisanship, no innocent child should be murdered!

American Life League has examined this very carefully and we have come, at long last, to know with certainty that in order to be consistent and be good servants to each and every one of God’s innocents, we can never again support any proposed law or amendment that does not provide equal protection and human rights to every single innocent human being without exception.

Even if the PCUCPA had been exception free, we would not have supported it.

Why?

Simple! The baby who is one minute old, one day old, or one month old is just as precious in the eyes of God as those this proposed law purports to protect.

Thus, we conclude that God wants us to fight for every baby every time. They are, after all, His, not ours.
