A Supreme Court Folly: The Same-Sex Union Decision

Last Friday’s Supreme Court decision regarding the union of two people of the same sex should come as no surprise to anyone involved in defending human beings from creation to death. The Obergefell v. Hodges decision is an extension of the evil that began infecting this nation 50 years ago this month when the court ruled in favor of contraception on demand. That decision, Griswold v. Connecticut, opened the floodgates for birth control, abortion, and now same-sex unions. And lest it escape the casual student of this rush to immorality, take note that the justices cited the Griswold case in their Obergefell decision.

It would seem that “freedom of choice” covers a multitude of sexual sins.

A prophet in his own time, Pope Paul VI wrote in his incredibly prescient 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae, “Just as man does not have unlimited dominion over his body in general, so also, and with more particular reason, he has no such dominion over his specifically sexual faculties, for these are concerned by their very nature with the generation of life, of which God is the source.”

Clearly contraception, abortion, and homosexuality confound God’s design for the human being and His plan to provide the gift of a child when He wills to do so.

Further, St. John Paul II continued teaching this truth and specifically stated in Familiaris Consortio, “When marriage is not esteemed, neither can consecrated virginity or celibacy exist; when human sexuality is not regarded as a great value given by the Creator, the renunciation of it for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven loses its meaning.”

The gift of human sexuality has been assaulted by the court system and by mankind in general for a very long time, but none of this changes the truth. And the tragic results of such arrogant disregard for God’s plan have now simply reared an ugly head once again.

Let us be perfectly clear: The use of the word “marriage” in this latest court decision is erroneous. As we stated in our press release, “Now, by judicial fiat, we are called to honor the fictional union of two people of the same sex.” The fact of the matter is that marriage is the union of a man and a woman, as designed by God. Nothing that the Supreme Court says will change that truth, nor are we obliged to acknowledge such illusory ideals as true.

It is evident that after a 50-year slide toward Gomorrah, this nation has lost its values and its soul. We fear that “our nation has become like a dead body floating downstream, to what destination only the devil knows.”

Dissenting Justice Antonin Scalia said this about the majority decision: “The Supreme Court of the United States has descended from the disciplined legal reasoning of John Marshall and Joseph Story to the mystical aphorisms of the fortune cookie.”

Chief Justice Roberts noted in his dissent, “The majority graciously suggests that religious believers may continue to ‘advocate’ and ‘teach’ their views of marriage. . . . The First Amendment guarantees, however, the freedom to ‘exercise’ religion. Ominously, that is not a word the majority uses.”

Now is clearly not a time for silence, for assent to the court, or for toleration of evil, no matter what price we may have to pay. Recall this profound statement by Sister Lucia of Fatima to Cardinal Carlo Caffara: “The final battle between the Lord and the reign of Satan will be about marriage and the family. Don’t be afraid,” she added, “because anyone who works for the sanctity of marriage and the family will always be fought and opposed in every way, because this is the decisive issue.” And then she concluded: “However, Our Lady has already crushed its head.”

American Life League “strongly opposes all attacks against the dignity of innocent human life and the sanctity of marriage, and will continue the hard work of rebuilding our culture from the ashes of its destruction.”
